Model status: preseason basis — ratings seed from the market win-total prior and 2025 QB depth charts (refreshed with announced Week 1 starters in late August). Walk-forward validated across three hold-out seasons (2023–25); methodology is on the NFL model page.

TieredSpread picks are tiered: moderate-edge picks are free; the highest-edge band (historically the model’s most accurate) unlocks with a subscription. Tiers activate once 2026 opening lines post — until then the BBMI margin and straight-up pick are shown for every game.

Why spread only — and why we trust it

The NFL model was built and frozen on a training window, then tested on hold-out seasons it had never seen (2023–25). The against-the-spread result held up out of sample — in-sample and out-of-sample accuracy matched — which is why ATS is the product.

Totals are projected by the same engine but haven’t cleared the same out-of-sample bar, so they’re shown for reference only — never tracked or sold as picks. We’d rather under-promise than pad the record.

Engine: every game is simulated 4,000 times by a Markov play-by-play kernel (deterministic seeds). Spreads and win probabilities come from the weather-blind champion arm; totals come from the PKY arm, which adds each team’s scoring environment and, in-season, wind and precipitation. Lines freeze at pipeline run time and do not change during the week.

Preseason note: before Week 1 there are no 2026 market lines, so the Vegas and Edge columns stay empty until books post — we never invent a number to grade against. Ratings currently assume 2025 QB starters; announced Week-1 starters are folded in during late August.
