The Brewers Got Better. Their World Series Odds Fell Anyway.
Dustin May gives Milwaukee another postseason starter and more flexibility for the stretch run. The problem is that Tarik Skubal changed the National League around them.
The Milwaukee Brewers made themselves marginally better at the trade deadline.
Their probability of reaching the World Series still fell from 25.6% to 16.6%.
Their probability of winning it fell from 15.2% to 8.7%.
Those results are not contradictory. They show the difference between evaluating a roster in isolation and evaluating its position against the rest of the league.
Milwaukee added Dustin May and Antonio Senzatela. May gives the Brewers another credible postseason starter and another way to manage a young pitching staff through August and September.
But the Dodgers added Tarik Skubal. Atlanta improved. The Cubs and Padres also strengthened their National League position.
The Brewers made a useful addition.
Their path through October became substantially harder.
What the simulation measured
BBMI compared two versions of the remainder of the 2026 season:
Standings, schedules, injuries, park factors and simulation seeds were held constant. Both versions used the same random-number lattice, allowing the differences to be attributed to the trades rather than variation between independent simulations.
The results come from 9,000 paired season-and-postseason simulations.
For Milwaukee, the relevant question was not whether the deadline helped the club reach the postseason. The Brewers were already effectively certain to qualify.

Dustin May helps more in October than in August
The simulation uses two different methods for constructing Milwaukee's pitching staff.
For the regular season, the model ranks five starters by estimated wOBA allowed. Under that measure, May narrowly misses the rotation.

May trails Gasser by only .002.
That is effectively a photo finish, but it places May in the simulated bullpen rather than giving him a full schedule of regular-season starts. As a result, Milwaukee's regular-season outlook barely changes.
The postseason harness uses a different measure. It selects three starters by FIP-core and moves the remaining starters into the bullpen.
Under that method, May becomes Milwaukee's No. 2 postseason starter.
That is the case for the trade.
May does not need to transform Milwaukee's regular season to provide value. He gives the Brewers another pitcher the model is willing to start in an October series.
He also gives Milwaukee more ways to organize the staff before October arrives.
More flexibility for the Miz and Milwaukee's young arms
The simulation does not directly assign value to fatigue management, innings limits or keeping young pitchers fresher for the postseason. Those benefits are therefore not included in the reported probability changes.
But May creates several practical options.
Milwaukee could use a six-man rotation for portions of the stretch run. It could stay with five starters while using May as a long reliever or piggyback option. It could shorten selected outings for Jacob Misiorowski and the other young arms without asking the conventional bullpen to cover four or five innings every time.
The exact structure matters less than the added flexibility.
With Brandon Woodruff unavailable, May gives Milwaukee another pitcher capable of covering meaningful innings and potentially starting in October. He does not replace Woodruff's expected impact, but he gives the Brewers another postseason-caliber option rather than forcing them to rely entirely on internal development and health.
Senzatela adds further length to the bullpen pool.
The Brewers did not overhaul their pitching staff. They made it deeper and easier to manage.
So why did Milwaukee's pennant probability fall almost nine points?
Because there is only one National League champion in each simulation.
The National League pennant probabilities must add to 100%. When one contender gains probability, the others must lose it.
The largest gains went to teams Milwaukee may have to defeat.

The Dodgers' gain alone accounts for most of Milwaukee's lost ground.
Atlanta's improvement takes another substantial share. The Cubs and Padres also move upward.
Milwaukee did not lose pennant probability because the model believes May is a bad acquisition. It lost probability because its competitors claimed a larger portion of a fixed postseason pool.
Skubal changed the entire National League
Tarik Skubal produced the largest championship movement in the study.
The Dodgers' probability of winning the World Series increased from 23.5% to 32.3%, a gain of 8.81 percentage points.
That increase was larger than the gains of the next four teams combined:

The Dodgers gained 8.81 points by themselves.
That is why Skubal matters so much to Milwaukee.
He did not simply improve another contender. He improved the National League favorite—the team most likely to stand between the Brewers and the World Series.
Milwaukee may now enter a postseason series with Misiorowski and May at the top of its rotation.
Los Angeles may enter with Skubal added to a staff that already included Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani.
The Brewers improved their pitching options.
The Dodgers changed the matchup.
Milwaukee's deadline deserves two grades
There are two defensible ways to grade what Milwaukee did.
Roster construction: B−
May becomes the Brewers' second-ranked postseason starter in the BBMI harness. He supplies rotation insurance, long-relief flexibility and another way to manage young pitchers during the stretch run.
Senzatela adds further innings depth.
Milwaukee filled a real need without requiring either player to become the staff ace.
Change in championship position: F
The Brewers' probability of winning the National League fell 8.96 percentage points.
Their World Series probability fell 6.51 points, the largest decline in baseball.
The result was driven largely by what happened elsewhere, but the purpose of the analysis is to evaluate the post-deadline field as it actually exists.
Milwaukee improved modestly.
Its strongest competitors improved more.
The final verdict
The Brewers did not have a bad deadline in isolation.
They acquired another postseason starter. They added pitching depth. They created more ways to protect Misiorowski and the rest of a young staff over the final two months.
Those are meaningful improvements.
They were not enough to offset the rest of the National League.
The Dodgers acquired Skubal and increased their World Series probability by 8.81 points. Atlanta gained 3.71. The Cubs and Padres also improved their postseason positions.
Milwaukee remained virtually certain to reach October.
What changed was what may be waiting there.
The Brewers entered the deadline with a 25.6% chance of winning the National League. They left it at 16.6%.
They entered with a 15.2% chance of winning the World Series. They left it at 8.7%.
Dustin May made Milwaukee's postseason rotation better.
Tarik Skubal made Milwaukee's postseason path worse.
